If you are uploading an image or sound clip, then you must credit the author or creator. We provide fields in the Mission Maker for you to include this information. The attribution fields are found next to every uploaded or EOL-selected image (e.g. the “Search EOL” button) or sound clip. You will have the option of entering the following information: Author, Title, License Type, and Source URL.
If an image is selected from the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), the applicable attribution fields will be filled out automatically.
Helpful Hint: You can often find the image or sound clip copyright licence information on the website where it is hosted.
For images and sounds clips in the Public Domain:
Images and sound clips in the Public Domain can be used without adding credit or attribution, as they are no longer protected by copyright law. You can simply select "PD" in the License Type attribution field.
For images and sound clips in the Creative Commons:
Images and sound clips in the Creative Commons require you credit the licence holder. To do so, enter the following in the attribution fields. First, enter the author (creator of the image or sound clip) or licence holder, then the title, then the type of licence the work is under (if it is not available, select the ‘NA’ option). Finally, enter the source URL of the website where you found it (if applicable).
For example:
Author: Joe Smith
Title: Grizzly Bear
License Type: CC-BY
Source URL: www.joesmithphotos.com
For images or sound clips that you or your organization own:
If you are uploading a photo you took or a sound clip you recorded, make sure to credit yourself. It is recommended that you accurately attribute your organization for any images or sound clips that they own.
If images or sound clips are under copyright by your organization, make sure you have permission to use them in your Agents of Discovery Mission. Be sure to indicate this file’s copyright by writing the following into the attribution fields:
Author: Organization Name
Title: A title (if applicable)
License Type: Copyright
Source URL: A link to the organization’s website (if applicable)
